How to Regrow Yellow Onions from Kitchen Scraps

Regrowing onions from store bought scraps is super easy, I promise. It's so easy that you don't even need any special gardening equipment or anything like that, so pretty much anyone can regrow onions no matter how bad of a gardening you might think you are.

You know that fuzzy bottom part of the onion that you typically cut off and throw away? Well, guess what... you can actually take that and grow it into a brand new onion plant!

Growing onions this way will work with pretty much any type of onions, including shallots, sweet, white, red, and yellow onions.

What You’ll Need To Start Regrowing Onions

I had mentioned that you won't really need much to get started and I meant it. I'm certain you already have these things in your kitchen.

  • 1 yellow onion from the supermarket (other types of onions will work too)
  • 1 small bowl

And that's it!

How to Regrow Onions in 2 Easy Steps

Step #1

Take your fresh yellow onion and chop off 1 inch from the bottom of the onion (root side). You can also use old sprouted onions too!

If you need a visual, please check out the super short YouTube video I created above for more details on which side is the root and how to cut the onion.

Step #2

Place your cut yellow onion roots into a small bowl root side down and add just enough water so that the roots are in the water but not too much so the top of the cut onion is not getting wet. If it gets wet, it may start to mold.

You can usually lean the yellow onion against the side of the small bowl to keep it from tipping over, and don't forget to change out the water every 2-3 days.

Simple as that!

How Long Does it Take to Grow?

One of my favorite parts about regrowing onions from the supermarket is how quickly it starts to grow.

Within 1 day, you will see the center of the onion start to grow roughly about 1 centimeter. Really cool, right?

After 3-5 days, you will start to see a good amount of new roots growing.

In about 1 week, the roots will be at least a couple of inches long at which point it is ready to be transplanted into your garden or pot!

Once you've planted it in soil, expect for it to take around 100 days or so for it to be ready to harvest.

Can You Regrow Onions Indoor?

You can regrow onions indoor or outdoors, but just make sure to place the small bowl by the window so that it gets sufficient sunlight. Once it's ready, move the onion plant over to a pot and continue to grow it by a well-lit window.

Can You Regrow Other Kinds of Onions?

Yes! This will work with all types of onions including red onions, yellow onions, sweet onions, shallots and white onions. How cool is that?

Now, Your Turn!

I told you this would be super easy. Now it's your turn to grow your own onions from scraps. I'm certain you have everything you would need already in your kitchen.

The best thing about regrowing onions is that you don't need to have any experience gardening at all and it's super fun, so what are you waiting for?

It would mean so much to me to hear about your experience growing onions, so please let me know in the comments below.
